We love dolphins! Dolphins are very intelligent, social and curious creatures. They are very aware of their surroundings. Sometimes they'll swim right up to our kayaks and underneath of us. Sometimes they are commuting just passing by and other times they are feeding, mating or playing and will hang around in the same spot for an extended period of time. Dolphins use echo-location to determine lots of details around them from size, shape, distance and even density of objects. Dolphins are usually always in groups called pods. Often times pods include family and friends that will stay together for years. On our kayak tours we love getting in the best spot to see as much as possible and we always try to go where the dolphins hang out! Dolphins are one of the best things about Virginia Beach! Getting on the water with your family!
Most of our time in our regular lives is spent on land and most of that is probably inside. Getting outside is just the beginning of connecting with nature. Getting outside in a city is different than being out on a beautiful trail. Here in the resort area of Virginia Beach we have a beautiful inlet and an amazing state park nearby. Getting in a kayak on the water with your family is a perfect way to really begin reconnecting to the nature around you while getting a feeling of adventure. It's not everyday you are paddling a kayak on the water with your friends and family. Once we begin stroking away from the docks and mingling with the ecosystem and wildlife that's when you're living in the moment. There's no past and no future just the beautiful scenery and the feeling of connection to the nature that you're a part of. On our kayak tours we like to see as much as possible. We will do our best to put you in the best spot to see Bald Eagles, dolphins, osprey, various diving ducks, pelicans and even the occasional sea turtle! There's nothing like seeing dolphins up close on one of our guided kayak dolphin tours. The Bald eagles are awesome too especially when they are soaring and fishing. Getting outside when you're on vacation in Virginia Beach is one thing but having an adventurous experience and connecting with nature while kayaking is another! We are passionate about nature and about people. We love to share our passions and nature with you! Let's make some lifetime memories kayaking in Virginia Beach!
Kayaking in Virginia Beach is one of the best things to do!
When I meet new people from different parts of the country not everyone has been in the ocean before. I meet many people that have never been in a kayak before either. I also meet people that have never been to Virginia Beach before. I think it is so awesome when I meet someone who is all three of those things! I meet several people each year that have never been kayaking, never been to Virginia Beach and have never been in the ocean. Talk about making a lifetime memory! It is such a rewarding feeling to be a part of a memory like that for someone. Sometimes they may even be a little nervous but want to try something new and step out of their comfort zone just a little. I love giving someone the confidence and faith to try something new like kayaking in the ocean. I know how exciting that is for them. Then when we are on a dolphin tour and the dolphins come swimming up next to the kayak it's truly a magical moment. Our kayak dolphin tour has brought so many magical moments to families vacation in Virginia Beach. It means so much to us to share those times with you. Let's go Dolphin watching in Virginia Beach!
Bald Eagles are huge!
Bald Eagles are seen often on our kayak tours. There are a pair of adults and a couple of juveniles that live in the trees in Rudee inlet. On our guided kayak tours we always try to take you to where the eagles are known to be. We see the eagles very frequently and sometimes get an airshow! There were many kayak tours last summer where our group would paddle right up underneath the tree that the adults are standing in. Until you get really close to a Bald Eagle it's hard to imagine just how huge they are. The females are larger than the males. The female is close to 36 inches tall with a wingspan of over 6 feet! They are very precise fishing birds and on many of our tours we would have the honor of watching them hunt fish. There were many tours when I can recall seeing the Eagle leap from its perch and fly out over the inlet with a purpose. It would fly straight and then turn and swoop very low to the water with its large yellow talons outstretched and strike the water with force. Sometimes it would have the fish and other times it would take a few passes. I like when it takes more than once because it is fascinating to watch. We have had the great pleasure on our guided kayak tours of seeing this aerial display happen within 50 feet of our boats! It is a memorable experience.
Dolphin Watching while kayaking in Virginia Beach
Dolphin watching while kayaking can be one of the most memorable moments of a vacation in Virginia Beach. One particular memory from last summer while on a kayak dolphin tour was on a beautiful hot July afternoon. Our group was just outside the Rudee inlet in the Atlantic ocean enjoying the amazing views and the feeling of the nature all around us while waiting for a pod of dolphins to come by. Just relaxing in the kayaks out in the ocean on a calm day is amazing by itself. After about 15 minutes we spot a pod of dolphins approaching from the South about 500 yards out. The excitement and anticipation of watching them get closer and closer to us was amazing. They quickly get right next to our kayaks and are feeding on a large school of fish. The dolphins are circling and surfacing within a few feet of our kayaks. The sound of the blowhole is loud and comes unexpectedly giving us a fun startle! The dolphins fed on the school of fish while slapping their tails against the water for about 30 minutes and other pods joined in as well. They swam so close you could see their eyes! It was a truly magical experience watching these majestic creatures.
Kayaking in Virginia Beach is a Learning experience!
There is so much to learn while kayaking in Virginia Beach from the ecosystem, history to the details of the wildlife around you! We have delicate tidal salt marsh ecosystems held together by oysters beneath the surface that filter the water to maintain the balance. Bald eagles reside in the trees that can live to be 20 years old. The female bald eagles are actually larger than the males! Then there are the dolphins! Dolphins are incredibly intelligent and curious creatures. Dolphins can also live to 20 years old. They are very social and family oriented often sticking together for life! Dolphins are protected here so it is illegal to pursue, harass, touch or feed them. Each dolphin has its own unique voice that the other dolphins can recognize. Dolphins use echolocation (just like bats) to make notes on their surroundings and hunt prey. Hearing is their greatest sense by far. When you book a guided kayak dolphin tour with Gokayak we are passionate about the details around us and we love to give you fun facts about your surroundings. Kayaking in Virginia Beach with Gokayak is a good way to learn a lot while making epic lifetime memories with your family. Dolphin watching and bird watching while kayaking through Rudee inlet is a good way to spend some time while vacationing in Virginia Beach.
Kayak dolphin Tours in Virginia Beach
Living in Virginia Beach I meet people from all over the world that come here to visit. Often times they are coming from a place without an ocean. In the warm months here the dolphins are plentiful and very active most of the time. Vacation is a special time for people to take a break from their busy schedule and regular routine. When someone comes to Virginia Beach and signs up for a kayak tour with me my goal is to make lifetime memories with them. I want them to look back on their vacation years later and say "remember that time we went kayaking with dolphins in virginia beach?!" Or "remember that guy Bryan that took us kayaking and showed us around the inlet?!" The feeling I get to watch someone making memories with their family on the water is beyond words. It is truly an honor. I had a couple from Indiana I recall from last summer that I took out at sunrise. We paddled through the inlet and out into the ocean in beautifully calm conditions. Large groups of dolphins with their babies surrounded us within feet of our kayaks and put on a show for about an hour. Although I see dolphins alot this was exceptional! This couple was blown away and speechless. All they could do was watch and gasp as the dolphins swam and broke the surface of the water right next to us. They told me they have never had an experience like that and reminded me how fortunate I was to live in such a beautiful place. I felt so happy knowing that we had just made wonderful lifetime vacation memories together and I had added something special to their lives. Dolphins are truly amazing creatures and the chance to see them up close is mesmerizing. Being out in nature on the water with your family is an epic memory in Virginia Beach no matter what. It's not everyday you go kayaking in Virginia Beach with your family!
